The Body Rhythm

Wired at Night, Exhausted All Day (It's Not Insomnia)

It's 2am. Nothing is wrong. And yet here you are — heart beating a little too fast, mind already running tomorrow's list, wondering why your body won't just let you rest.

Hi Reader,

"I'm so tired, but I can't sleep" — I've heard some version of that from three different women this week. If that's been you lately: it's not random.

What Your Body Knows

A woman I've been working with told me she's started dreading bedtime. Not because anything is wrong — her days are full, she's managing, she's fine. But somewhere around 2am her eyes open, and her mind is already three items into tomorrow's list, heart beating just a little too fast.

She asked me what was wrong with her.

Nothing is wrong with her. Her cortisol — the hormone that's supposed to rise in the morning and quietly fall by evening — never got the signal to fall. It's still running the daytime program at 2am, because daytime is the only setting her nervous system has known in months.

The bottom line: Your body isn't failing you. It's been trying to tell you something.

In My Rotation

Here's what's had my attention lately.

🎧 Episode 27: Why Your Bedtime Routine Might Be Keeping You Awake — I go deep on why your bedtime routine is keeping you awake, and I include some quick and easy things that actually help before bed (none of them "just relax more"). 👉 Listen here

🥥 Coconut water, in the afternoon — In Ayurveda, coconut is a summer ally. It cools the body and mind and it's deeply hydrating, which matters more than usual right now — we've had a heat advisory where I am, and you lose more water than you realize just sweating through the day. I also took a moon bath at sunset this week — just sat outside as the heat broke — and felt my whole body cool and settle in a way that surprised me.

YOUR TURN: What's your actual wind-down ritual right now — tea, a show, doom-scrolling, none of the above? Hit reply and tell me, I'm nosy about everyone's nighttime habits.

What Rhythm Actually Looks Like

One of the most common things I hear from women in this pattern: they feel wired at exactly the moment they're finally still enough to notice it. It's not a coincidence, and the mid-night wake-up is a simple way to tell if this is what's happening to you.

SOUL CHECK-IN: Is your mind at its busiest exactly when your body finally stops moving? If so, that's not insomnia — that's your cortisol rhythm asking for a different signal earlier in the day, not more effort at 10pm.

The Summer Rhythms Reset is a simple 5-day guide — seasonal recipes, a 3-day meal plan, and morning-to-evening rhythms — built to help your body cool down, digest better, and actually rest this season. No rules, just small seasonal shifts.

My World

I'm just getting back from a trip to France. A place I used to live, a place I love. I have a big announcement coming soon which combines my love of France, food, yoga, and Ayurveda.

Before you go: If 2am has been visiting you lately, the Summer Rhythms Reset is the most practical place to start — five days, $17, built for exactly this. 👉 Summer Rhythms Reset

Be well and nourished,
Chelsea

P.S. Does your mind get loudest right as your body finally stops moving? Reply "that's me" — I read every single one.

Hi Reader, We're deep in summer now — and if you've been feeling more irritable, more reactive, or just slightly off in your body in a way you can't quite name - you're not imagining it. The Body Rhythm Are Women Wired Differently? Hi Reader, Something came up on my Morning Reset Live this week that I haven't been able to stop thinking about — and I think you might want to hear it too. I've spent the last two years in deep caregiving mode. No days off. No real breaks. Just going from one thing to the next, asking my body to do more and more with less and less. And I did it. I showed up. I advocated. I held it together. But here's what I had to learn the hard way: women's...

Chelsea Johnson Ayurveda The Body Rhythm Bloated, Tired, and Run Down (It's Not Three Problems) I spent a Fourth of July lying in bed, nauseous, listening to fireworks I couldn't watch. I'd had all the tests. Everything came back normal. Nobody told me it was all connected. Hi Reader, With the Fourth of July having just passed, I've been thinking about rhythm — and what happens to the body when it gets disrupted, even briefly. This week's issue is about something I wish someone had explained...
