Your Body's Been Buffering For Years

What if menopause isn't the problem, but the moment everything else finally becomes visible?

Hi Reader,

Fall is starting to peek through, but the heat's still hanging on, so I'm balancing both this week. I also just moved (more on that below), and this week's episode dives into something I think a lot of you will feel seen by: the way perimenopause and menopause gets blamed for everything you're feeling.

WHAT YOUR BODY KNOWS

I went back to the gym recently. I want to lose the last ten pounds I'd put on in the last 1-ยฝ year, get more cardio in, and get the leg I injured snowboarding a year and a half ago strong again for the upcoming season. At one of the weight training classes, a woman started talking to me. She'd recently been diagnosed with osteoporosis. Her joints were sore. She could barely move the way she used to. When I asked her what she thought was behind it, she said, "It's just menopause."

It's the story we're all told. Name a symptom and you'll find an article blaming perimenopause or menopause for it. But Ayurveda doesn't even have a word for menopause. It sees this stage of life as a normal transition. The hormones we carry while we bleed act as a buffer that cushions against stress, inflammation, and the imbalances we've been quietly overriding for years. As the hormonal buffer naturally reduces and softens, what's been hidden underneath finally surfaces. The joint pain, the bone loss, the sleep disruption. These aren't things menopause causes. They're things menopause reveals.

The bottom line: Your body isn't failing you. It's been trying to tell you something. Sometimes for decades.

IN MY ROTATION

Here's what's had my attention lately.

๐ŸŽง Is Menopause Really The Problem? - I recorded this after the conversation with the woman at the gym who told me her osteoporosis was "just menopause." It's not the full story, and this episode goes deeper into why. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Listen to the episode now.โ€‹

๐Ÿ”” A Late-Summer Reminder - Here is Southern California it has been three weeks of hot and humid weather. These are classic pitta qualities as the summer winds down. A gentle reminder to keep drinking water and intaking fluids, keep movement light and gentle, and lean into foods that are easy to digest. This isn't the time for foods for spicy foods. This episode is a good refresher. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Listen: Summer Wellness Tips

YOUR TURN: Beach, mountains, or backyard, where would you rather be sweating right now? Reply and tell me.

WHAT RHYTHM ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE

The real shift isn't finding a way back to how your body used to feel. It's asking what it's been carrying that never got addressed, and what it actually needs now. That question changes everything about how you move through this transition with more ease.

SOUL CHECK-IN: Where have you been overriding your body instead of listening to it? Start by noticing one place this week where you push through instead of pausing.

If you want real support easing from Summer to Fall, The Fall Reset is a gentle place to begin.

MY WORLD

I just moved. It was last minute, but a good kind of last minute. It's also been exhausting in the best way. Moving always turns into an unplanned sorting through of what I'm still holding onto. I found things I'd forgotten I had. I sorted through what to donate, and I went through the things I've kept from my dad's house, deciding what to carry forward with me.

I've always found moving to be a strange but good time to let things go. There's a word in yoga, raga, for attachment, and packing up a life always forces you to look at what you're still holding onto and why. My space had gotten cluttered these last couple of years, mirroring a cluttered mind. It felt good to finally let some of it go.

Before you go:

If you've been feeling the shift from Summer to Fall, join me in The Fall Rest. It starts September 28th, and I'd love to see you there. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Join The Fall Resetโ€‹

Be well and nourished,

Chelsea

P.S. Ever caught yourself blaming your body for not cooperating when it was actually just trying to tell you? Reply "that's me." I read every single one.

Nice chat, see you next week.

Chelsea Johnson Ayurveda The Body Rhythm The Season Is Shifting (Is Your Nervous System Ready?) You looked up from your desk and the sun was already setting. Earlier than it should be. Earlier than you were ready for. Hi Reader, I was sitting at my desk this week, mid-task, when I looked up and realized the sun was already setting. It was earlier than it had been just two weeks before. Something in my chest quietly shifted with it and realized fall is coming. WHAT YOUR BODY KNOWS The...

Chelsea Johnson Ayurveda The Body Rhythm Beyond Equality: The Shakti Within Hi Reader, Women's Equality Day was last week, August 26th. It's a day to honor the women who fought for the right to vote, to lead, to be full members of society. But I think equality is asking something more of us now โ€” not to keep proving we can match the pace and productivity, but to allow ourselves the room for softness, creativity, rhythm, connection, nourishment, and rest. WHAT YOUR BODY KNOWS Many of us are...

Chelsea Johnson Ayurveda The Body Rhythm How to Live Longer (Without Optimizing Anything) What if living to 117 has nothing to do with your diet? Hi Reader, I read something this week that stopped me โ€” not because of what it said about food, but because of what it didn't say about it at all. WHAT YOUR BODY KNOWS I recently read about a woman who lived to be 117. The headlines were all about what she ate โ€” olive oil, yogurt, some secret longevity food. But what stood out to me was something...
