Have you ever frozen, gone numb, or disappeared during a moment that was supposed to feel connecting?

The Body Rhythm

Hi Reader,

This week's issue is one of the most tender ones I've written — and also one of the most important. It touches on something most of us have experienced but rarely talk about: the way the body sometimes closes down in the very moments we most want to feel open. If that resonates anywhere in you, I hope this lands gently.

What Your Body Knows

Brené Brown spent years researching vulnerability and connection — and what she found surprised even her. When she asked people about love, they told her about heartbreak. When she asked about connection, they told her about disconnection. And when she dug into why, she kept running into the same pattern: people were numbing. Not just with obvious things, but with busyness, scrolling, overworking, sugar — anything to take the edge off of feeling exposed. What she discovered was both simple and profound: you cannot selectively numb emotion. When we shut down the feelings that feel too vulnerable — the fear, the shame, the longing — we also shut down joy, gratitude, and the capacity for deep connection. We flatten ourselves to stay safe. And in doing so, we lose access to the very thing we were trying to protect.

Here's what I want you to know: if you have ever frozen, gone numb, or disappeared during a moment that was supposed to feel connecting — you are not broken. Your nervous system was doing exactly what it was designed to do. It was protecting you. The freeze response, the dissociation, the numbness — these aren't character flaws. They are ancient survival wisdom. And the path back to Eros — that deep, sensual, uniting life force that lives in all of us — begins not with trying harder, but with learning to signal safety to the body.

The bottom line: Your body isn't failing you. It's been trying to tell you something.

Good Medicine This Week

Here's what's had my attention lately.

🎧 Why Your Body Shuts Down During Intimacy (It's Not You)

This episode goes deep into the nervous system science behind the freeze response, dissociation, and the Ayurvedic concept of Eros as a life force. I explore why intimacy requires safety before desire — and what it actually takes to begin thawing a nervous system that has learned, over time, that it isn't safe to feel.

🎧 Free Yoga Nidra Practice

If you've been running on empty and sleep isn't cutting it, this is the practice I come back to again and again. Yoga Nidra brings your nervous system into a state of genuine rest — not forced relaxation, just a slow, guided unwinding that most of us have never actually experienced. It's 12 minutes and it's free. 👉 Listen here

Have you ever experienced that moment of suddenly going still or disappearing during intimacy — and did you understand what was happening? I'd love to hear from you. Hit reply.

What Rhythm Actually Looks Like

The path back to Eros is not dramatic. It is not a single breakthrough moment. It is a daily, patient, tender practice of listening to the body and offering it something a little softer than what it has known. It might look like noticing the urge to numb — the reach for the phone, the glass of wine, the sudden busyness — and pausing for just a moment before acting on it. It might look like placing a hand over your heart and asking: where am I right now, and what do I need?

The nervous system learns safety the same way it learned danger: slowly, through repetition, through the accumulation of small experiences that say — this time was different. This time, I was okay. Intimacy with others always begins with intimacy with yourself. And that begins with listening.

If your body is exhausted but your mind won't quiet down, Yoga Nidra is one of the most effective tools I know. It's not sleep — it's a guided practice that brings your nervous system into a state of deep rest while you remain gently aware. Even twenty minutes can shift what hours of broken sleep can't. This is where restoration actually begins.

In My World Right Now

I'm currently building something I'm really excited about — the What's Your Digestive Personality Quiz. If you've ever wondered why some foods leave you bloated, why your energy crashes at certain times of day, or why stress always seems to show up first in your gut — this quiz is going to give you some answers. It's rooted in Ayurvedic wisdom and designed to help you understand your body's unique digestive nature. Stay tuned for the launch — I'll share it here first.

Before you go - If this issue touched something in you, I'd love for you to try Yoga Nidra today. One guided practice. 12 minutes. It's the simplest signal of safety you can give your nervous system — and that's where it begins. 👉 Try the free Yoga Nidra practice here

Be well and nourished,
Chelsea

P.S. Where in your body do you most feel the door to sensation and connection close — and what might it be asking you for when it does? Hit reply and tell me. I read every response.

Chelsea Johnson Ayurveda The Body Rhythm Why your digestion is still struggling (it's not what you're eating) What if your bloating, your afternoon crash, your unpredictable gut — were all trying to tell you the same thing?
